Il silenzio esiste solo nei luoghi morti come le profondità dei deserti, il fondo degli abissi, lo spazio siderale. 
Nell’asepsi acustica delle stanze insonorizzate, oppure nella tomba. Negli anni Sessanta dicevano che il suono del silenzio è quello dell’incomunicabilità e dell’isolamento, che “cresce come un cancro”. 
In effetti nulla di essenziale accade in assenza di rumore. Fin dal primissimo principio, l’universo si genera con il rumore supremo del Big Bang. Tutti noi nasciamo in mezzo alle urla.
Le rivoluzioni fanno rumore, come anche l’inarrestabile entropia di tutte le cose. Il rumore ha una potente valenza politica, perchè “una rete può essere distrutta dai rumori che l’aggrediscono e la trasformano, se i codici in atto non possono normalizzare e reprimere quei rumori.”
Nel mare magnum dello scibile musicale, sempre meno elitario e sempre più accessibile, il documentario Nothing Essential Happens in the Absence of Noise di Sil Bia ha il merito di individuare un argomento che vola basso sotto i radar dell’informazione, se non quelli dei freaks addetti ai lavori. Il termine breakcore viene usato per la prima volta nel 1992, per descrivere musica hardcore in 4/4 con l’aggiunta di schemi ritmici spezzati, fatta con il proposito di “spingere in avanti i confini del genere techno” perché “lo star system viene replicato anche nelle scene culturali molto di nicchia.”. Nasce in questo modo un genere musicale immensamente caotico, disturbante, un suono continuo da pioggia acida, da temporale analogico, che può ricordare “il rumore che fa una vecchietta quando si rompe il bacino” oppure quello “di leopardi e lupi che ululano in un inverno ghiacciato”. 
La breakcore si contraddistingue con un’assenza totale di vezzi estetici che possano far gola al sistema culturale. Non si può costruire un business sul rumore.
Nothing Essential Happens In The Absence of Noise è caratterizzato da immagini mosse, dalla grana sporca e disturbata, che si sposano ritmicamente con il caos aritmico della breakcore. In questo modo c’è un’omologia fra la materia trattata e lo stile scelto per rappresentarla.
Le interferenze visive vengono create con un Noise Maker fatto con circuiti integrati, lo stesso con cui la rumorista veterana Sans Culotte realizzava i suoi visual set fatti di pesci volanti, vevè del vudù, fughe vertiginose attraverso architetture prospettiche di fabbriche abbandonate, capri sabbatici, molecole, false Marie di Metropolis, equazioni, cavie da esperimento, cieli televisivi.
Lo scenario in cui ci muoviamo è quello dei grandi regni del rumore delle metropoli contemporanee. A Berlino ha la sua sede l’etichetta breakcore Praxis Records, un progetto molto concettuale, che si propone di “applicare idee alla realtà”. 
Il rumore è praticato come un atto di guerriglia, come “un disturbo della normalità”. Per la gente di Praxis negli anni Novanta era normale avere Marx a colazione, Guy Debord a pranzo e Baudrillard a cena. Dopo pranzo si scriveva un articolo per la fanzine Datacide. 
Dopo cena si organizzava un rave illegale. Dopo il rave si infilava un rosario di rumore che andava a finire inciso su un disco privo di etichetta. I dischi della Praxis Records sono privi di ogni informazione, sopra non c’è “ovviamente” alcuna scritta, con una metodologia comunicativa che prende origine dai White Labels degli albori della musica house e techno. In principio tutti i dj di Praxis si chiamavano Dj Jackal, era un nome multiplo come Luther Blisseth. Perché “la visibilità è una trappola”. 
Sfuggire all’imperativo della visibilità è l’unico modo per poter fare azioni di resistenza (cfr. Anonynous). 
La breakcore nasce assieme alla prima scena techno, che cercava di rimanere invisibile anche all’occhio dei media. Con i media non si collaborava, per sfuggire alla lunga mano dell’industria culturale. Non a caso praxis vuol dire fare. Fare cose, fare cose che non possono essere strumentalizzate da altri per produrre l’ennesima, inutile, svilente ricchezza pecuniaria.
Fra sfrigolii di rumor bianco, litanie prese da La Società dello Spettacolo, paradossi culturali, interviste ai fondatori dell’etichetta e voli planari attraverso le psicogeografie urbane, Nothing Essential Happens In The Absence of Noise documenta metodologie rivoluzionarie che, a distanza di venticinque anni dalla loro formulazione, sembrano ora più che mai attuali.

Silence exists only in dead places like the depths of the desert, the bottom of the abyss, the sidereal space, the acoustical asepsis of soundproofed rooms, or in the grave. It was said in the Sixties that the sound of silence is that of incommunicability and isolation, which “like a cancer grows”. In fact, nothing essential happens in the absence of noise. From the very beginning, universe generates itself with the supreme noise of the Big Bang. We are all born surrounded by screams. Revolutions blast out, as the unstoppable entropy of all things.
Noise has also a powerful political value, because “a network can be destroyed by noises that attack and transform it if the codes in place are unable to normalize and repress them.”
In the mare magnum of musical knowledge, less and less elitist and more and more accessible, Sil Bia’s documentary has the worth of identifying a topic that flies down the radar of information (excluding of course the radars of authorized freak personnel). The word breakcore was first used in 1992, to describe hardcore music in 4/4 with the addition of disrupted rhythmic schemes, made with the purpose of “pushing further the boundaries of the techno genre” because “the star system is replicated even in very small sub-scenes and subcultures.”
An immensely chaotic, disturbing musical genre was born: a continuous sound of acid rain, of analogical storm, which can remind of the sound “of a granny breaking her hips” or “of wolves howling at the sky in an icy winter”. Breakcore stands out with a total absence of aesthetic charms that could attract the cultural industry. No business can be built on noise.
Nothing Essential Happens in the Absence of Noise is characterized by blurred images, with dirty and disturbed grain, which rhythmically espouse the arhythmical chaos of breakcore music. There is a homology between the subject matter and the style chosen to represent it. The visual interferences are created with a Noise Maker, made by integrated circuits, the same used by the veteran blast-maker Sans Culottes to create her visual sets of flying fishes, voodoo vévés, dizzying flights through architectures of abandoned factories, sabbatical goats, molecules, fake Maria of Fritz Lang’s Metropolis, equations, guinea pigs, television skies.
The scenario in which we move is the one of the great kingdoms of noise of contemporary metropolis. The musical label Praxis Records has its headquarters in Berlin. It is an extremely conceptual project, whose purpose is “the application of ideas in reality”. The noise is practiced like a guerrilla act, as a “disturbance of the normalcy “. In the Nineties, the ordinary administration for Praxis people was to have Marx for breakfast, Guy Debord for lunch and Baudrillard for dinner. After lunch, they used to write an article for the Datacide fanzine. After dinner, they organized an illegal rave party. After the rave party, they transfixed a rosary of noise, which would be pressed on a record without label. All the records of Praxis are devoid of any kind of information; there are “obviously” no writings on them, following a communication strategy which comes from the White Labels in the dawning of house and techno music. At the beginning all the DJs of Praxis records were called DJ Jackal, it was a multiple name like Luther Blissett. Because “visibility is a trap”. To escape from the imperative of visibility seems to be the only way to perform actions of resistance, like in the case of Anonymous. Breakcore was born with the first techno scene, which attempted to remain invisible even to the media eye. There was not collaboration with the media, to avoid the long reach of the cultural industry. It is not by chance that “praxis” means “doing”. Doing things, doing things that can’t be exploited to produce the umpteenth, useless, devalued pecuniary wealth.
Among sizzlings of white noise, litanies from The Society of the Spectacle, cultural paradoxes, interviews to the founding members of the label and planar flights through urban psychogeographies, Nothing Essential Happens In The Absence of Noise provides documentary evidences of revolutionary methodologies which seem, twenty-five years after their formulation, actual more than ever.
